In this adapation of a classic young adult novel, we emphasized Anne's relationship to her new, natural surroundings and her ability to constantly see the wonder in her world. Director Brown requested a design that had the ability to be both indoors and outdoors and created a "period feeling of poetry." I collected images of cherry and apple trees in spring blossom to study the sculptural origins of the shape and to find inspiration for the "deconstructed canopy" look needed by the director.  The backdrop was influenced by the pretty yet wild landscape/waterscape of rural Prince Edward Island. Downstage of the painted backdrop, a layered half-drop of voile squares created an ethereal represenation of the canopies of the fruit trees found to the island.
